The Bangui and Surrounding Areas PES project deploys Payments for Environmental Services to support landscape restoration and sustainable land management around the capital of the Central African Republic. It first establishes the legal, institutional, social and land-tenure conditions required for PES, including community governance, identification of individual environmental service providers, Free, Prior and Informed Consent, safeguards and municipal zoning plans. It then contracts beneficiaries and supports agroforestry, assisted natural regeneration and conservation in community forests. Payments are conditional on verified results, supported by georeferenced monitoring and CAFI-aligned MRV systems. Inclusive governance for women, young people and Indigenous Peoples is embedded throughout the project.
