The Kwango-Nioki Agroforestry Project forms part of PROBAK, the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Payments for Environmental Services programme for Kinshasa’s supply basin. The project is implemented by the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), with FRM Ingénierie (FRMi) as the main aggregator. It promotes agroforestry systems combining acacia with food crops, primarily cassava, as well as maize and vegetables. The model is designed to increase agricultural production on savannah and degraded land while reducing pressure on natural forests. Farmers receive technical support, planting materials and performance-based Payments for Environmental Services after plantations have been verified. The project also supports producer organisation, land-tenure formalisation and access to markets, while generating sustainable wood energy and additional income from products such as cassava, charcoal, honey and other non-timber forest products.
