Located in a DRC province heavily reliant on forest resources, the PIREDD Kwilu project was designed to promote sustainable alternatives to deforestation while improving the living conditions of rural populations. Building on REDD+ and local partnerships, the project aims to transform land use practices, strengthen governance, and foster resilient livelihoods. Initially launched in 2019, the project has been extended to December 2025 through an addendum, which introduces new activities and expands the intervention area to Gungu Territory. The program promotes agroforestry, forest conservation, land-use planning, and inclusive governance.

Objectives
The project pursues the wo overarching goals of carbon sequestration and deforestation avoidance through the promotion of agroforestry and improvement of local populations livelihoods.
It is structured around five specific outcomes:
- Strengthening REDD+ governance at the provincial level.
- Promoting agroforestry and forest protection by producers.
- Protecting the village environment through community involvement.
- Raising awareness about the role of vegetation cover in natural resource management.
- Establishing grievance redress mechanisms.

Results to date
By June 2025, the PIREDD Kwilu has achieved :
- 273 Local Development Committees created or revitalised.
- 135 simple land use plans (PSAT) validated.
- 3,993 hectares of community agroforestry plantations established, and 1,682 hectares set up by agricultural concession holders.
- 33,768 hectares of community forests protected across 135 villages
- 8 villages supported in implementing sustainability activities: beekeeping, improved charcoal production, and equipment support
- 1,194 awareness broadcasts aired on radio and television about forest protection and agroforestry, and over 1,700 visual materials (posters, signs, leaflets) installed in villages
- 30 village environmental and social management plans (PGES) developed, with 47.5% women participation during their preparation.
- 84 complaints recorded, of which 82 have already been resolved.
- 184 technical service agents and local authorities trained since the start of the project, particularly in agroforestry, land use planning, environmental and social safeguards, and REDD+ activity monitoring.
