Maniema, a landlocked province in the heart of the DRC, is home to remarkable biodiversity but faces increasing deforestation due to shifting agriculture, artisanal mining, and growing demographic pressure. The PIREDD Maniema was promotes sustainable land management while improving the living conditions of local communities. It operates through an integrated approach combining participatory planning, agroforestry, land governance, and natural resource conservation.

Objectives

The project aims to ensure that the population and communities in the intervention areas of Maniema province benefit from the sustainable development of agricultural, forest, and pastoral resources. To achieve this, the project is structured around three specific outcomes:
  • Improved livelihoods through sustainable natural resource management and local development.
  • Strengthened capacity and functioning of relevant government structures.
  • Enhanced capacity and involvement of non-governmental organisations and local actors.

Results to date

By end 2024, 22,393 people (including 10,564 women) have received income or payments for environmental services (PES)
Land use planning
  • 68 Simple Land Use Plans (PSAT) developed, covering 104 villages and 505,020 hectares.
Community forests
  • 10 Local Community Forest Concessions (CFCL) and 4 Indigenous and Community Heritage Areas (APAC) established, with secure legal attribution.
  • 253,802 hectares of community forests protected or under sustainable management within CFCLs and APACs.
  • 3,263 hectares restored, including 2,063 hectares of savannah reforestation (for fuelwood) and 1,210 hectares of natural forests.
Agriculture and harvest storage
  • 28,429 households (including 10,543 women) now practising sustainable agricultural techniques on 5,441 hectares of land, with 4,653 hectares dedicated to perennial crops (coffee, cocoa, palm, moringa, jackfruit) and 8,572 hectares for food crops (rice, maize, soy).
  • 94 km of agricultural tracks rehabilitated and 56 storage buildings or shelters constructed.
Sustainable energy
450 charcoal producers, including 117 women, trained in improved techniques, and over 4,000 improved cookstoves ("Mapishi Bora") sold, generating around USD 50,000.
Governance
  • 1,102 local governance structures established and operational, with 35% female representation in decision-making bodies.
  • 102 women leaders and 686 indigenous and disabled individuals trained to enhance their engagement in governance.
